James Polk Memorial, North Carolina  State Park  Hotel Near Historic Sites  Historic Aviation  Museum of History
James Knox Polk, our nation's 11th president, was born in 1795 on a 150-acre farm of gently rolling hills worked by his parents. A memorial to him is located on part of these lands. While not original, the log buildings and furnishings you’ll find there are period pieces dating from the early 1800s. When James was 11, the family sold the homestead (by then it was over 450 acres) and moved west to join his grandfather in Tennessee.
Andrew Jackson State Park. This 360-acre park, in nearby Lancaster, South Carolina, was set up in 1952 to honor our nation's seventh president, Andrew Jackson. Within it, you will find a museum with small gift shop, two 1-mile nature trails, a replica 18th century schoolhouse, fishing lake, campground, amphitheater, meeting house, and two picnic shelters. The museum also contains four exhibit rooms that reveal colonial life in South Carolina's backcountry: a dining room, bedroom, textile room, and early implements. On the grounds you can view a bronze sculpture of the young Andrew Jackson by Anna Hyatt Huntington.  [Top]

The 6,240 sq. ft. colonial two-story home with a full attic and cellar is made of local stone. The property's original two-story stone springhouse was rebuilt in the 1970s, and in the 1980s, a detached split-log kitchen was added.  [Top]
